I have no idea why Lady Gaga made a song called "Burqa" but this guy says that she was copying Madonna: Lady Gaga’s Burqa: appropriation ≠ liberation[CUT PART OF ARTICLE]... If this “leak” is authentic, it wouldn’t be Gaga’s first go-round with Burqas. Here was a previous bad attempt at a Burqa-like outfit in London (2012). [CUT PART OF ARTICLE]... In short, my response to Gaga here is not to be offended. It’s more of a yawn. I am bored. You’re trying too hard here, Gaga. Time to move on. Yet again, Gaga is proving to be a copycat of Madonna, who had already done the whole appropriating of Niqab/Burqa thing by wearing some kind of a metal face mask.
Madonna, wearing some kind of metal niqab nightmare thingeeMadonna, wearing some kind of metal niqab nightmare thingee from Madonna's Instagram account A Somali Muslim woman had a powerful online response to Gaga: The thing about this appropriation of the burqa that people need to understand is that people like Lady Gaga haven’t done a thing for the communities [here and abroad] that wear, live and breathe the garb who are subjected to harassment for doing so. The words “appreciation” and “admiration” are painfully hollow when you take a piece of clothing from a community and strip it of its intent and the consequences that come from it. …. People love to scream equality and colorblindedness when such an event arises, but such a world is completely theoretical until we fix these the caricatured perceptions about Islam. The power dynamics here cannot be ignored. ------------ Wait. If Gaga wore a burqa in 2012, and Madonna uploaded that photo this year, how was Gaga copying? And last I checked, Madonna never did a whole song based around burqa's. I agree with the part I bolded in blue.

The article says: Yet again, this Niqab is not similar to burqa so Gaga isn't copying her. And like my video above proved Madonna didn't invent anything and isn't even the first singer who has done anything publicaly first. Here's a photo of lil'Kim from January 2003

The people who made this stupid comparisons definitely didn't hear about Eumir Deodato, very influential man in music industry. And look at this photo of Eumir's CD cover from 1973 0:00 From 0:50

Letme guess? He didn't recieve any credit did he? Sure he didn't. It doesn't matter that it's just a remix. It's part of her official release. It was one of many remixes released on a single and she earned money for that.

I agree with the others but not the Lamedonna one. ALL THE PEOPLE LADY GAGA IMITATED IN HER 'APPLAUSE' VIDEO: MADONNA, CHER, AND... BOTTICELLI?- After nearly enough time to relegate her to irrelevance (so, approximately two years), Lady Gaga has returned to the spotlight with the release of her music video for "Applause," the first single off her forthcoming fourth studio album, ARTPOP. The video — released on Good Morning America Monday morning — holds to Gaga's usual recipe of barely-there ensembles, crazy make-up, and psychadelic visuals. But it also looks a tad, dare we say it, derivative.
Gaga has gotten flack in the past for seemingly emulating the pop divas who paved her way (just ask a Madonna fan, he/she'll tell you), but the "Applause" video seems to go beyond that. Rather than an accidental similarities, the video seems to purposefully pay homage to artists who came before — or at least, we hope it's on purpose. From the aforementioned Madonna to other music idols such as Cher and David Bowie (whom Gaga also sounds like in certain verses), Gaga's influences are widereaching; she even appears to borrow from Rennaissance painter Sandro Botticelli. With an album name like ARTPOP, it's not surprising she would want to tip her hat to inspirational artists of the past and present — so that's the reason we're going with here. There are just too many similarities, listed below, for this to be a coincidence...

I don't agree with most of the comparisons. The link which Anthony showed earlier(there were many examples from art not musicians) was better. For example: I think Janet Jackson comparison is bad. The inspiration here was probably Natali Kills. Look at the third photo: The long black gloves and one on the neck. Miley Cyrus also might have been also copied in 'applause'(she's in a big bird's cage and shows up huge wings). But most of the comparisons are rather weak.

The "Gaga copied Madonna" comparisons have become dry and stale. I personally don't think everything Gaga does is a copy of Madonna. I find Gaga's style to be more similar Gwen Stefani or David Bowie or possibly Cher (in terms of fashion). Nothing about "Applause" is similar to any Madonna song. The fact that the Madonna fans were unsure of which song she "copied" (some said "Give Me All Your Luvin'; others said "Girl Gone Wild", "Over and Over"...) is more than enough proof. A while ago, one of her fans said that Gaga was copying Madonna again because her video would be hand-painted, just like Madonna's "Rain" music video. From what I can tell, Madonna was not the first/did not invent hand-painted films or was the first to utilize it. Another post claimed that Gaga was copying Madonna again because she was debuting her music video in Times Square and Madonna debuted her video in Times Square as well. How is that copying? Madonna was not the first to debut a music video at Times Square. Or the one about how Gaga copied Madonna by working with a producer Madonna worked with before.
