I might do this for most of the years when she was popular. 21 million record sales looks impressive now, but when you compare it other albums released at the time her record sales aren't that impressive. I don't care about record sales but her fans are obsessed with that type of stuff. I'm starting in 1984, when her fans claim she became the most popular artist after her MTV Video Awards performance.

I think some of Madonna's record sales are made up by fans. For example, on Wiki, Music (the album) is said to have sold 15 million copies worldwide and the source is an article from 2005. A recent source, from 2012, says Music (the album) has sold 11 million. Also with Erotica. Wiki says 6 million worldwide (and the sources aren't reliable at all!) but this article says 5 million. Sure, the fans are quick to change her sales when they increase but don't even bother changing them when they are shown to be lower than they actually are. VH1 is a more reliable source than those above since the site actually focuses on music. Sourcee

Wikipedia articles can be written and later changed by anyone. It's not a reliable website, especially when Madge is invloved and her delusional fans can do everything to make her look more succesfull than she really is.

I don't hear about many Madonna wannabes until 1985. I'm pretty sure there were like three, or four, Madonna wannabes in 1984 in the whole world, but the whole Madonna look didn't truly bloom until 1985. She was still just 'some popstar' in September of 1984.
Honestly, she was a nobody in 1982 and 1983. Then in 1984, she was still just a top 15 hit singer! It wasn't until late 1984/1985 when she became 'Madonna.'
