I'm not one to use the word "flop" often but...
The Album-
Did NOT reach #1 in any country. Lol.
The DVD-
#1 in 15 countries.
But... The terrible quality of the product caused some poor sales/ratings. Lol. And Madonna was the one who edited the show. So no surprise there.
Amazon.com Rating-
3.1/5 - for the defective DVD
Other Reviews-
A lot of reviewers criticized the sound and image quality.

United States Billboard Chart-
The CD/Album sold LESS than the Dry and Bitter DVD/CD.
Chart Moves: Album Sales Hit New Low; Madonna's 'MDNA World Tour' Debuts; Earth, Wind & Fire Reaches Chart High
- If Madonna was such a great businesswoman (which she's not) and wanted to make as money as possible, she would have released the DVD as Billboard stated in their last sentence.
- Did worse than the Dry and Bitter Tour/sold less than half. (Dry and Bitter Total: 31,000; MDNA Total: 15,000).
- Wikipedia: "In the United States, MDNA World Tour failed to debut within the top-forty of the Billboard 200 albums chart, unlike her previous live albums, and charted at number 90..."
United Kingdom-
The album sold less than what was originally predicted. The sales of her concert DVD have also been declining. Lol.
- Wikipedia: "A midweek prediction by Music Week magazine had MDNA World Tour listed at position 37 of the UK Albums Chart. It ultimately debuted at number 55 on the chart with sales of 1,759 copies while topping the DVD chart of the country with bigger first week sales of 5,599 copies. MDNA World Tour became Madonna's first live release not to enter the top-twenty of the UK Albums Chart, after the top-twenty placements at number 18 (14,449 sales) with I'm Going to Tell You a Secret (2006), number seven (22,227 sales) with The Confessions Tour (2007) and number 17 (12,405 sales) with Sticky & Sweet Tour (2010)." (Source 1, Source 2).
Older albums did better than hers. If you see on the list, you can see Pink, One Direction, Calvin Harris, Justin Timberlakes' older albums did better than hers.

Do NOT buy Blu-ray version! It is defective!!! September 10, 2013

This is scandalous!!!!!!!!! How something like this can be released!? Issues:
Audio (in 5.1 setting): There is no sound from rear right speaker and the sound from the front right one is also very low. Sound is in general of very poor quality, no bass (no LFE), tons of echo!!!
Video: This is unwatchable! My iPhone takes better videos during the concerts. It is unbearably grainy! I even played her Sticky and Sweet blu-ray for comparison and the quality of that one was soooo much better. How could they release something like this???
I requested my money back and I will wait until they re-issue the proper recording!
P.S. I can see now (http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=220574&page=11) that this is an issue already reported in Europe (earlier release date). People complain about audio and video. It looks like the DVD version is correct, even the picture quality surpasses the blu-ray, which only points out that there is a problem with blu-ray pressing.

For the six months it took Madge to edit her concert into "Madonna: The MDNA World Tour" concert film extravaganza she professes, one would wish she got her vocals to match her lips. After an extended opening sequence taken from her sold out 2012 tour, Madonna appears to the roars of the crowd. You can imagine the deafening boom that accompanied it and the surround-sound music that would fill the concert venue. But instead - when Madonna opens her mouth - out pops a paper-thin voice that is so disembodied it doesn’t even match her lip movements. This makes it seem like she re-recorded the vocals after the fact. The choice to have the backing track turned down so low doesn’t help much either. In fact, it makes it sound as if Madonna is on a cabaret stage with a five-piece band.
I know these comments will have me shunned by the legion of Madonna worshippers, but please note: I am not commenting on the performance or the show itself. I saw the show. It’s fantastic despite the fact that much of the music performed was from her less than stellar last album. What I’m commenting on is the sound mixing and editing on the Blu-ray. While it looks great, the sound is uneven and it’s so over-edited it doesn’t allow us to focus on the great choreography and staging.
Die-hard fans won’t care, but I’m a little shocked that this also has a companion CD which features the badly mixed songs. There are some interesting arrangements of her classic hits here that could have stood some studio alterations to make them agreeable when played as a standalone audio-only CD.

If you didn’t see Madonna’s MDNA tour or if you enjoyed it and want to experience it again, this is certainly still worth watching. There’s electricity and technical dazzle on display. I just wish the audio sounded more like an actual concert and the editing wasn’t so fast and furious. This is a pop concert tour, not an art film.
Special features include only a 20-minute documentary on the dancer’s auditions. It’s interesting, but we expect a bit more.

An ambitious woman like Madonna will not let herself become a nostalgia act. She makes that clear every time she goes on tour: She’s living in the moment, and she’s all about her newest material. But as her career expands, her fan base ages and her biggest hits become increasingly distant in time, Madonna has to adjust her shows like any other veteran act. She proves to be too overly attached to her more recent songs on her new “MDNA World Tour,” available on a two-disc audio set as well as DVD and Blu-ray.

Chart Moves: Album Sales Hit New Low; Madonna's 'MDNA World Tour' Debuts; Earth, Wind & Fire Reaches Chart High
-- Madonna, "MDNA World Tour" (No. 90): The album version of Madonna's "MDNA World Tour" concert video release debuts at No. 90 with 4,000 sold. It was issued only as a digital album and a CD-R on demand from Amazon.com. It is her 26th chart entry on the Billboard 200.
Meanwhile, on the Music Video Sales chart, the blu-ray and DVD version of the "MDNA World Tour" release combine to sell 11,000 for a No. 1 debut. It's her 10th No. 1 and sixth chart-topper in a row.
Her last live album and video release, 2010's "Sticky & Sweet Tour," was released on blu-ray, CD/DVD and as a digital album. The former configuration enabled its No. 1 debut on Music Video Sales with 5,000, while the latter two combined for a No. 10 arrival on the Billboard 200 (28,000).
Had "MDNA World Tour" been issued on traditional CD and CD/DVD (and/or CD/blu-ray combo), then the album would have naturally charted much higher than No. 90 on the Billboard 200.

Three previous live albums by Madonna have made the Top 20 in the last seven years - but MDNA World Tour seems unlikely to do so, after debuting at number 55 (1,759 sales). She previously debuted and peaked at number 18 (14,449 sales) with I'm Gonna Tell You A Secret (2006), number seven (22,227 sales) with The Confessions Tour (2007) and number 17 (12,405 sales) with Sweet & Sticky Tour (2010). The DVD version of MDNA World Tour sold 5,599 copies and debuts at number 31 on the Video Chart. Madonna's studio MDNA album topped the chart but fell rapidly and has sold only 131,924 copies in 18 months.
