The Madonna fans say...
HoldUp8: And it's HILARIOUS that some people claim Cher achieved anything CLOSE to what Madonna has in the music industry. She's sold a TOTAL of 12 million albums in the U.S. She only has a dozen top 10 singles. Her only worldwide smash was Believe. She doesn't write or produce any of her songs. She's never made a groundbreaking music video or advanced pop music in any way. She hasn't influenced generations of other artists whatsoever. Cher is culturally insignificant.
Dita Parlo: I agree. I've also seen people claim that Cher was first with the kind of performances Madonna does. Like, really? WHEN has Cher done anything remotely as groundbreaking as Madonna? Blond Ambition changed the way pop acts perform. I've seen many try to imitate it AFTER, but I have never seen anyone doing anything remotely similar, or on that scale BEFORE Madonna. I like Cher, but she hasn't achieved half of what Madonna has.

First off, Cher is an ACTRESS. She devotes the majority of her work to acting (and a much better one than Madonna will ever be). Making music became a side job. Examples would be Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez. Victoria Justice... They choose and focus on being actresses but they also choose to do music as a side job.
While Cher did not always sell out her live shows, she did have performing in them. That is, back up dancers, themes, etc.
And I'm sure there were artists before Madonna incorporating art into their live shows.
Once again these fans show that they think pop music began in 1984 with Madonna when in reality it did not.
Hasn't influenced other artists? In my opinion, I think Gaga copied Cher's style more than she did Madonna's. Cher always wore crazy outfits that drew attention to her (same as Gaga). To say that Cher did not influence anyone is one of the most idiotic things I have ever read.
Culturally insignificant?
- first female to show bellybutton on TV (so I've read in multiple sources)
- "Cher emerged as a fashion trendsetter in the 1960s, popularizing the jet black long hair, bell-bottoms, bare midriff, bandanas, and Cherokee-inspired tunics."
- "Through her 1970s television shows, she became a se.x symbol."
- Madonna the Queen or "Re-Invention"? Well, Cher was re-inventing her style, looks and music before Madonna.
- "She was credited by Chicago Tribune as "the person who paved the way for Madonna, Lady Gaga and many more"." Again, please tell me how Cher hasn't influenced anyone?
- "Cher has sold over 100 million solo albums worldwide."
And before Madonna started the outerwear-as-underwear trend in the 80's with her stolen looks, Cher was walking around in underwear to awards, TV shows, etc. This made many of her outfits controversial because they thought she was trying to sexualize society (which I don't think was her intention).
Once again Madonna fans have made me laugh. It shows how delusional they are if they think music began when Madonna stepped into the spotlight.
